As of November, 2002, I sold my car. Oh well, easy come, easy go.
I suspect that I’m not the only one, but growing up, I was always told
“work hard now, and when you finish school you can do whatever you want.”
You know, do your homework now, study now, take your tests now, etc. Well,
I was never really much of a fan for that jazz, so I didn’t really do it. Still,
I managed graduate from High School the youngest person in my grade and then finish
my Master’s degree in a hard science 5 years later.
Of course, I feel that its now time for the “do whatever you want” phase of my life. And what better
way to start that off than with buying a dream car?
Well, the local Dodge dealer told me that all the TV commercials about 0% APR and
factory cash-back doesn’t apply to the Viper.
That narrows the performance car market down quite a bit. The
Mitzubishi 3000GT had been discontinued, as well
as the Dodge Stealth and Nisan 300zx. Corvettes are overpriced ($50,000 new),
and Ferrari’s are just way out. Also,
the new Eclipses
are ugly, slow, and ungainly (even though no one else agrees with me).
This narrowed the field down to the Chevrolet Camaro SS, the
Pontiac TransAm, the Ford Mustang Cobra,
and the Subaru WRX.
Why the WRX? It can’t accellerate or top out as fast as the GM’s or the Cobra,
but with its all wheel drive system, it can corner on a dime at 60+ mph.
I took a 5-speed for a test drive, and I was impressed. Also, you can go offroading with it
like an SUV!
I didn’t like the Cobra — I’m a little on the tall side, and I was a little cramped in the
driver’s seat. The TransAm is a bit too gaudy for me. It has a flashy spoiler on the tail, and it just
begs for cops to watch out for it. I’m much more into a “sleeper” sort of car.
So, it came down to the Camaro SS or the Impreza WRX. I took the Camaro SS for a test drive — and
immediately fell in love.
My previous car was a Buick LeSabre — and believe it or not, the Camaro is actually longer, wider, and heavier!
There is plenty of room for the driver to stretch out. The rear seats fold down for an adequate amount of storage space.
I got removable roof panels (T-Tops) which make it similar to a convertable, but without the canvas top.
In the summer time, it can’t be beat.
Oh yeah, and it goes from 0-60 in 4.8 seconds, and can outperform any car on the road except for the Dodge Viper, the Corvette C5,
and maybe a Ferrari or a Lotus.
Check it out. I’ll be replacing these photos with action shots,
just as soon as I can get someone to take a picture of me doing something cool.
