New Beginnings

Well, that’s it. I found out yesterday the the seller will not come to an agreement on the house I wanted to buy, so I will be staying at my apartment. I don’t see us being interested in looking for a different house any time in the near future.

Instead, I’m ready to take the big plunge. I’ve had some side business or another cooking for almost as long as I can remember working. It’s come to the point now where I think I have learned as much as I am going to learn without making a bigger commitment to it. So, I turned in my resignation at work today, and in 2 weeks I will be working for myself full time.

This is totally stressful, of course, more so because my career is really on a roller coaster ride upward. But it is also a sort of a relief. It took a huge effort not to smile as I was informing my boss of my intentions. Despite everything else, this just feels right. I expect that there are some hard financial times ahead — but no more so than I have dealt with in the past, and in fact much better because my fiancee is an accomplished and distinguished worker at her company.

I will be concentrating on two core businesses. Now that I will no longer have to worry about co-workers reading my blog, I can write much more about those here. Not today though. Today I get to rest.

In conjunction with my wedding in 2 months, this is the beginning of a new phase in my life, and I recognize that as being significant. I was looking for a change, and I think that this will be a good one. I look forward to a new beginning :)

Google Ads

You may have noticed that I added a small google ad on the right of this page. I am currently getting around 1500 unique visitors a month. That isn’t a lot in the Internet scale of things, but I wanted to experiment with revenue generation. Initially, I wanted to be able to cover the costs of hosting this site. However, I found that what’s even more interesting are the types of ads Google decides are appropriate for this site.

Because my blog entries are typically about all different sorts of things, I think Google has a hard time figuring it out. As of today, for example, Google seems to think that this is a plumbing site :)

I’m not a handyman

Okay, so this is the second time I’ve had to call my super to fix some plumbing that I broke. Last time, I was replacing my kitchen sink faucet, and the water shutoffs didn’t work. Of course, this didnt stop me from tryin to do it anyway (if I switch them fast enough, how much water could really get out?). This of course ended up with my super spending an hour or so fixing my goof.

This time, I was replacing our bathroom vanity sink with a pedistal sink. This was at my fiancee’s insistance (hmm… there must be some angle to blame her? Doh — she reads my blog!), and will hopefully get us a little more cash when we sell out appartment. Well, it turns out that the pipes were not quite the right size for the pedistal. Instead of getting some proffessional help, of course, I decided that the pipes should be able to bend just a little to make it fit. No, looking back, that wasn’t particularly smart.

Well, my super is stopping by in a little bit to help me out. It’s a good thing I gave him a decent tip for the holidays. And, coincidentally, that today is my “work from home” day at work.

I told my super that I wouldn’t be doing any more plumbing-related “improvements.” He told me not to quit my day job.
