You can develop games for Xbox 360 :)

The 1.0 version of XNA Game Studio Express coming out this fall will allow you to develop and debug games on your PC or retail Xbox 360 console.

The beta is already available for download, but only supports PC. Check it out at http://msdn.microsoft.com/directx/xna/gse/

And if you're interested in creating games for Live Arcade, the RDP requirements for *traditional* DVD-based game development don't apply. Info on how to contact the Live Arcade team can be found at http://www.xbox.com/en-US/dev/developingforlivearcade.htm

I agree with you on MS claims that the arcade section is a area for indie developers but there are other areas you can explore at a cheaper cost. Valve's Steam is available and also the ability to publish on the PC or Mac. With Steam, it might be harder to get published but it's a great distribution model (similar to XBox Live Arcade). No CDs and an installed user base of Half Life 2.

Now I know that the shareware game market on the PC is flooded with titles and not lucrative unless you are selling the CD with a 1000 games for 9.99. But the Mac indie game market is available. The cost to develop for this market is virtually free. The tools are provided with the OS (IDE, Compiler, SDK, Debugger, etc...). OpenGL/OpenAL/SDL are available and come install on every OS. Apple might frown upon games on their system but they can't ignore it. Their developer website has a section devoted to Video Game Development. [http://developer.apple.com/games/]. The cost will come in at the time of marketing and distribution. There are several mailling list, blogs and even a book that discusses online distribution for Macintosh Apps. Greenstone from PangeaSoft sells a book for Mac Video Game Developers [http://www.pangeasoft.net/book/info.html].

I hope this has been helpful. Do not get discouraged about the X360's lack of support for the Indie Devs. If your title is good enough they will come knock your door down to get you to publish with them.
